SALONE DEL MOBILE 2013.

RONAN AND ERWAN BOUROULLEC FOR BMW i.

In a unique cooperation the internationally renowned French designers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec and BMW i present the installation "Quiet Motion" during the Salone del Mobile, the world's biggest furniture fair of its kind. A con-
temporary interpretation of a new mobility concept.

The installation will be presented from 9th to 14th April 2013 in the courtyard of Minor cloister and hall at Facoltà Teologica, Via dei Cavalieri del Santo Sepolcro,
3 – 20121 Milan.

Visionary design based on sustainable materials and generous space.

The designers and BMW i share a passion for innovative projects, which make pathbreaking design vivid. The result is an installation (17 x14 meters) that interprets the understanding of sustainable mobility. It rotates slowly and silently, reminiscent of a carousel and is an allegorical interpretation of movement and contemplation as well as of the forward-looking vehicle design of BMW i in aesthetic and pared-down form, using sustainable BMW i materials.

The carbon for the revolutionary lightweight design of the BMW i bodywork, for example, was created using renewable energy sources and is a key material along with the interior leather that has been treated using vegetable tannins. Without any further chemical application, it is nevertheless very hardwearing and boasts a unique look. The designers also used fabrics made of the sustainable wool yarn that will feature in the BMW i seat upholstery.

The installation itself comprises different levels of slowly turning platforms partially made of cork; this renewable material is sourced from one of the world's largest cork manufacturers, Grupo Amorim in Portugal. A column of rigid yet extremely lightweight carbon connects the platforms and the fibreglass roofs above them. On the upper side the roofs are coated with weather-resistant BMW i bodywork paint, while the lining on the underside is made from the fabric of the future BMW i roof liner.

Seating areas covered in the same soft leather as the BMW i car seats invite visitors to sit and linger for a while. Electric motors beneath the floor of the installation are responsible for the gentle rotation of the harmoniously configured platforms.

BMW i and Mashable bring the Global Innovation Series to Berlin.

Berlin, 16 July 2012. One year after the launch of the online Global Innovation Series, BMW i and Mashable teamed up on the ground to take trending topics of innovation in the world of urban mobility and technology to the next level.

Global Innovation Series

Ideas explored throughout the day stretched far beyond either parties' main line. As Sebastian Schwiening of BMW i noted, BMW i is "not just only about owning a car it's about how best to get from a to b." Adam Ostrow, Chief Strategy Officer of Mashable went as far as to deem the car one of "the next great platforms for innovation." "You need to really think about a different type of use," added Bonnie Shaw, Director of Strategy, iStrategy Labs.

Leaders in the fields of technology, design and urban planning echoed an ongoing conversation about how citizens exist in, change and move around urban environments. Speakers were selected by Mashable following a call for submissions and included the minds behind startups that aim to improve mobile urban life: Allison Brown of Woofound, Ben Berkowitz of SeeClickFix and Brandon Kessler of ChallengePost. From the newest mobile apps and media to creative uses of design and architecture, Tony Douglas, host and Head of Marketing for Mobility Services, BMW i, ensured that topics reflected the increasing awareness and importance of global connections.

"How technology is impacting urban life, mobility, those sorts of issues...we're here today to bring those stories to life." The day's story telling, as Ostrow termed it, took the form of content sessions, panels and presentations.

Rachel Smith, the principal transport planner with AECOM, seemed to agree about the underlying principles of the day: "The most important thing is that you can make things and you can do things and you can experiment with things." This hands-on attitude paired perfectly with the event's choice of city – a city "where you do have so much space to experiment," remarked one visitor.

Ostrow summed up his takeaway of the day when bluntly asked to describe the Global Innovation Series in three words or less: "Connectivity and Everything."

Connecting BMW i and Mashable at this exciting event proved to be yet another step towards further productive dialogues regarding the future of urban environments.

BMW i & Dwell:
The Sustaethics Event at Art Basel Miami Beach 2011.

On December 2nd, BMW i and Dwell took the stage together at the 11th annual Art Basel Miami Beach, one of the most prestigious art events in the world. To celebrate the launch of the BMW i3 Concept and BMW i8 Concept, the 2 vehicles were presented to almost 1.000 attendees in an exciting event space designed by inimitable Miami architect Chad Oppenheim, within the walls of a parking structure by Swiss architecture team Herzog & de Meuron.

It seemed to be the consensus among the guests at the Sustaethics Event on December 2nd, that the ongoing partnership between Dwell and BMW i is a most fruitful one. The event – as was immediately apparent from the 500 trees dotting the event space (a donation from BMW i to the Million Trees Miami initiative) – set the stage for the future of the brand: a holistic approach to rethinking the way we live and move.

Watch the video below to see DJ Chelsea Leyland play against the backdrop of the BMW i3 and BMW i8 concept cars, as well as hear from Benoit Jacob, Head Designer of BMW i and Michela O'Connor Abrams, President of Dwell Media.

BMW i Goes NYC.

For the second year, the City of New York is improving the way it provides helpful real-time information to its citizens.

The NYC BigApps 2.0 Competition will reward the developers of the most creative and best implemented App. The Apps must have an impact and value to the New York Citizen delivering information from the City of New York's NYC.gov Data Mine.

"BMW i is proud to support the NYC BigApps 2.0 Competition", says Ian Robertson, Board Member of BMW AG for Sales and Marketing (read bio). "We established the Venture Capital Company BMW i Ventures to have a closer link with groundbreaking mobility solutions, right from the start. We chose to base the company in the Big Apple because this great city offers insights into the mobility solutions our customers require. It gives us access to top talent in creative fields." Ian Robertson adds.

And BMW i ventures will continue to invest in this area. Its first strategic investment MyCityWay was one of last year's finalists and has now matured into a service with more than 1.5 Million active users across the globe.

Update: Congratulations to Roadify, first prize winner of NYC BigApps 2.0 - the iPhone App alerts users to the latest subway, bus, or driving conditions by providing real-time updates from commuters in addition to official transit data.
